Untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3G 3.1.2 with 5.11.07

Seeing as blackra1n is only a tethered jailbreak, installing your own [custom] firmware is the way to go. But, (at least what happened to me) is that I constantly got 1604 errors while installing firmware of which I made using PwnageTool. As a short howto, here's what I did:

  1. Get blackra1n and run it. It'll put your iPhone in recovery mode. iTunes should be closed.
  2. Download or create custom firmware. If you are using PwnageTool, make sure to check off Activate so it is not activated. Just before it's done creating the firmware, click Yes to if your iPhone has been pwned before.
  3. Start up iTunes, and restore using the firmware you just made. For Windows users hold shift and click on Restore. For Mac users hold option. Make sure your iPhone is in recovery mode not DFU mode. That's the part that I forgot.
  4. iTunes should do it's thing and you'll be good to go.
  5. After I put the firmware on, I had no service whatsoever so I ran blackra1n again and I had service. If you have the 5.11.07 baseband, be sure to install sn0w in blackra1n. You might need to fiddle around with things.

With Ymas coming up, it makes me realize all the blogging I've done in the last year. I'm glad I got as much traffic as I did, surprised even. Anyway, here are some highlights of the last year or so.

Most viewed article: How I got Debian Lenny working on my Eee.
Debian is my favourite distro of all-time, so after getting it working on my Eee (which some people had problems with) I thought I'd write a post on it. And well, I did. Runner up is the Eee wallpapers that I made.

How to: Simple load balancer setup for web servers

I finally put together a load balancing setup together this weekend, and I'm surprised it was this easy.

What you'll need is three servers, two web servers and one server for the load balancer. It's not recommended that you only use one load balancer since it's a single point of failure (SPOF) but I only had one extra server on hand. For this tutorial, I used Debian Lenny.

First thing's first, download and install pound on your load balancer.

Adding another LAN NIC in pfSense

I recently swapped out my router (a PIII) running Smoothwall with pfSense. I'll say that I'm glad I switched. Anyway, what I found is that Smoothwall wouldn't let me add another LAN interface, making it a real router.

So, once you get pfSense installed, go to Interfaces->(assign)

iPod Touch 2G jailbroken with 3.1.2 firmware

Finally got around to installing the 3.1.2 firmware on my iPod.

  1. Get the 3.1.2 (or 3.0) firmware.
  2. Grab PwnageTool from TPB (you'll need a Mac for this :) )

Everything else is downhill from there. Open up PwnageTool, pick your model, find your firmware and that's about it (unless you want to change boot logo, etc.)

Then restore your iPod with the new [custom] firmware with iTunes. In iTunes, go to your iPod on the left hand side, hold shift and press restore. Find your firmware and that's it.

Pourquoi?

I've come to realize that no one reads a blog where people (such as me) babbles on about their life. Know why? No one cares. People dig tutorials on the internet, if they wanted to read stories they'd pick up a book.

I'm in the process of upgrading my Hackintosh from 10.5.2 to 10.6. Shouldn't be too much of a pain in the ass, but oh well.

I've gotten a serial terminal working on my Thinkpad. I can know get a [virtual] terminal, via serial to one of my servers which is great. I could SSH into them, but plugging shit in is much more fun. I'd suggest those who want a quick terminal to check this out.

Hackintosh build

I finally got around to building my own Hackintosh using no special hardware really. I guess the only requirements you really need is a CPU that supports SSE2/3 instructions. Just grab the latest Kalyway DVD and you're good to go.

Mac OS X (Darwin) didn't detect my on-board NIC right away and I didn't feel like finding the kernel extensions for it; whatever so I found a spare 3Com NIC which worked. I'm stuck at 1024x768 until I get a new graphics card. I haven't tested audio yet so I'm not sure if that works. Edit: Works perfectly!

Edit: Screen shot here.

There's a shitload of other kernels you can try, but the original mach_kernel worked for me.

Klam fyr

Life has been comme ci, comme ça lately. Lately, I just don't care about anything. School especially. I really just don't care about anything. It sort of gave me more freedom though. I do whatever I want to and I don't give a shit. I get ASC which fucks me up even more. Maybe it's the energy level, I don't know. That's it, I just don't know.

I feel like I'm being pulled down all the time, having a weight on my back. Guilty conscious? If only I had feelings; then I'd be normal or at least sub-par.

I rarely talk about myself in my blog and it's about time I do. Depression has really messed up my concentration level. I haven't done any real coding in a long time. I can't bring myself to it. It's difficult.

As with most of my newer blog posts, they contain a picture that [sometimes] symbolizes my post. This one sums it up.

I'll skip the whole 'I haven't posted for two weeks' intro.

It's only October and it already snowed, a couple of inches and it's still here. Mornings are sure colder.

I finally put together my new fileserver, and up  from my one harddrive server before. I was going to do a RAID1 configuration, but instead went back to a normal partitioning setup (XFS on the secondary HDD for the files). Recieved another computer the other day, so I'm at a total of 7 servers.

I was planning on installing Darwin (hehe) on one of the faster ones, but I can't get this damn DVD is fried (for whatever reason). I'm hoping that it has CPU instructions for SSE2/3.
